Simulation training allows the athlete to train the entire athletic system of visual processing, information processing, and physical action. Together this continuum of human behaviors, Perception-Cognition-Action, form a complete picture of brain functioning.

 

Perception-Cognition-Action

In contrast to the isolated approach of brain and vision programs, coaches choose to develop athletes with an integration of components from the perception-cognition-action continuum. Examples include batting practice, fielding practice, watching game film and visualization. We refer to these type of exercises as simulations because they create artificial re-enactments of a subset of the overall gameday experience. Simulations allow coaches to reduce the complexity of gameday, slow down and focus on a portion of the overall complexity. This is a fundamental approach to coaching. In sharp contrast, athletic brain and vision training focuses on overly isolated components of the Perception-Cognition-Action continuum. This approach ends up training a skill or ability without the critical integration of all components of real-life athletic ability. Training component abilities in isolation cannot work. Complex real-life performance requires a rich interplay of perception, cognition and action.

We do this by exercising the components of the brain as a system that must be trained together. The complete system includes seeing, processing and acting. Together this continuum of human behaviors, Perception-Cognition-Action, form a complete picture of brain functioning. Other programs isolate pieces of this continuum and fail to take a complete picture of brain activity.
